Human Growth Hormone and Its Effect on Children

The Human Growth Hormone, as the name suggests, stimulates growth, cell reproduction and regeneration in humans. This hormone was initially used to treat growth problems in children. At the very beginning of its usage, it had to be extracted from the pituitary gland from the cadavers and hence a very tiny quantity was available. This was administered to children via injections. The method of extraction also made it an expensive procedure.

Pitfalls Of Extraction

The method of extraction from the pituitary glands of human cadavers caused contamination of human pathogens in those who were injected with it. This led to the spread of the disease called “Creutzfeld-Jacob”, a brain disorder. With improved research, the situation is better. The injections are now successfully administered without causing any disease. They are also successful in increasing growth.

HGH Working in Children

The HGH works in two ways as given below.

Sleep is essential for the production and release of Human Growth Hormone.
  • Direct Cycle: The direct cycle is when the production of the hormone lessens as the body ages. This lessening of the hormone causes the body to age physically and the symptoms of ageing are seen. Metabolism, moods, growth et al are affected.
  • Indirect Cycle: Indirect cycle occurs when the pituitary gland works to manufacture and release the hormone when you are asleep. This occurs during the initial time of sleep.

IGF-1

The Human growth hormone changes to IGF-1 in the liver. IGF-1, secreted in the liver and also known as  Somatomedin C, is the reason why all the changes associated with ageing occur in the human body. It is the IGF-1 that acts on target cells and causes the symptoms of ageing.

Insulin, which is secreted from the liver, is usually used for fighting the indirect effects of the HGH on the human body. There are two feedback circuits for the effects of the HGH. These act as the endocrine system’s core body.

  • Negative Feedback Circuits: Two of the hypothalamic hormones namely, SS and GHRH, are used by the negative feedback circuits for controlling growth hormone’s secretion.
  • Positive Feedback Circuits: This is seen when the output of a pathway stimulates inputs to the pathway.

There is only one functioning way for increasing the growth hormone secretions. It is by minimizing the effect that the negative feedback circuit has by putting in use a natural positive feedback circuit.

Benefits Of HGH In Children

Researches over the years have proven that HGH injections are very effective in children and produce amazing results. The treatment should be undertaken till the child reaches the standard height appropriate for his age. The increase in height can be observed by both the child and the parents within a period of about 4 months. HGH intakes are also known to increase the appetite in children and also keep in control the fat accumulation in them.
