4 Different Types of Hormones and their Roles

The Endocrine system of your body encompasses an integrated network of glands that produces a number of different types of hormones which are produces for the proper functioning of the body mechanisms.  The hormone-secreting glands such as the pituitary, the thyroid, and the hypothalamus produce hormones to regulate different functions of the body and to bring about communication between the different cells. Here are 5 types of hormones, their origin and the roles they play in your body.

  1. Growth Hormone-The Growth Hormone, abbreviated as GH is a type of long chain amino acid hormone secreted by one of the major glands of the Endocrine system, namely the pituitary gland. Growth hormone is responsible for regulating and promoting the rate of growth in children as well as is conducive to building of muscles and bone mass in adults. It is also conducive in propagating cell growth and reproduction. A deficiency in Growth Hormone leads to stunted growth in children and weakening of bone structures and muscles in adults.
  2. Adrenaline- Adrenaline is released by the adrenal gland which are present above each of your kidneys. The adrenaline hormone is responsible for augmenting heart-rate, dilating the air passages of the respiratory system and contracting the blood vessels. The hormone is generally produced in the body in situations which demands greater energy such as a “fight or flight” circumstance, whereby it helps the body to challenge the exhilarating or challenging situations. For instance, when one gets excited, the augmented levels of the hormone adrenaline dilated the air passages which increase the flow of oxygen to the lungs which in turn accentuates the energy levels for the time being.
  3. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone- This is a peptide hormone released by the anterior pituitary gland that is responsible for maintaining the normal functioning of the thyroid gland. The TSH stimulates the production of thyroid hormone in your body through the thyroid gland. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone is also referred to as Thyrotropin.
  4. Steroid Hormones- These are a different group of hormones that are steroids by nature but play the role of a hormone. These are extracted from the cholesterol in your body and are thus soluble in lipids. They can be of mainly 6 types, namely, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, aldosterone and androstenedione. These hormones are responsible for a number of functions such as regulating metabolism, water as well as salt balance in the body, immunity functions and development and controlling of sexual characteristics. They also help the body to recuperate and overcome injuries as well as ailments.
An imbalance or disorder in any hormone can cause serious defects in the body which can only be overcome through proper treatments.
